Populonia
Populonia
Distance: 20 km
Connected to Baratti by a scenic road, Populonia has Etruscan origins and was one of the most important ancient centers for ironworking and trade, using iron extracted from Elba Island.
Perched high on a promontory, it overlooks the sea with the Gulf of Baratti on one side and the Buca delle Fate (Fairy’s Hollow) on the other.
Its impressive fortress and surrounding walls were built in the first half of the 15th century to defend against pirate attacks.
The small, welcoming historic center is home to a private museum with archaeological finds, along with a few artisan shops and stores selling local specialties.
Just a short distance away lies the Baratti-Populonia Archaeological Park.
